Checking in...

Still here, insanely busy but still around.

A cousin in law died last week. I don't recall having met him. Funereal is today.

My favorite uncle died yesterday morning. Funereal is Tuesday. Unfortunately with Mark's work, we are unable to attend.

Garden is growing well. Green Beans have sprouted. Zucchini is getting there. Harvested a few cherry tomatoes and a dozen delicious Cherry Globe Radishes so far. Sugar Snap Peas are finally setting pods.

Planted some saved pumpkin seeds under the Peach tree. Hoping they grow, but we'll see.

Working on clearing out other spaces, to divide plants and rework beds. My brother told me to bring whatever I wanted when we come up in Oct- he might regret that.

Mom is mom. The signs of age related dementia are getting worse. Uncle Joe apparently had it too, along with diabetes and pancreatitis. Not surprised as Grandpa had Alzheimer's. (They are not blood related, so I have to worry about heart issues (none so far, knock on wood) and diabetes- under control thankfully, never got above pre-diabetic and staying in the low range, knock on wood).

Otherwise, busy, busy busy.

If I didn't know better...

I'd say this person was an entirely fabricated, nonexisting person.

But I know better.

It's weird though, other than a potential divorce announcement, coinciding with a marriage announcement to my birth mother, followed by at least one that I've found so far, birth announcement of their second son, he does not exist.

No census records, no obituary (he died in Apr 2022), no first marriage announcement, not in anyone else's trees, nothing.

I *know* he existed. I *remember* him - not fondly either.

But there's so little to document his life. If I could just figure out who his parents were...

Oh, this is fun...

Crunched some numbers, did some research and got myself a Newspapers.com sub.

Then, on a whim, I looked up Algernon.

Filed under things that make you go 'oooooooo' and 'not entirely surprised'.

The_Daily_Sentinel_Sun__Jan_18__1953_(1)

I guess, if you bleed out, then, yes, that can indeed cause heart failure (what the family was told he died from.)

Didn't find anything more that day, but did some more looking today and found a second article-

The_Daily_Sentinel_Fri__Mar_27__1953_

Not the least bit surprised by this either, given what I know of Algernon's relationship with LaVanchia, and the fact, his own daughter knew nothing of him because her mother- his 2nd wife- never talked about him. So, good on Pauline.

Mark's dad has decided to come down and spend Christmas with us. He arrives Friday.

Imagine my surprise upon realizing my debit/check card has expired and I have not received a new one yet. (It's been that kind of last month or so)

Now imagine the shock and resulting anger when I find out that *I have to order a new one and pay for the service*.

What happened to banks just sending out new cards before the old expired?

Oh! And to get a new card, *I have to give my old one up *first*, before I even have a new card!*

WTF, Woodforest.

*sighs*

So, they did a free diagnostic on the CR-V, because they'd *just* gotten a bulletin about the computer throwing a fit when you change out certain parts like we had replaced.

Wiped the firmware, reinstalled the updated version. Drove around a bit, lights stayed off. No charge to us.

Mark had to cancel the rental vehicle. They came and picked him up. (They have a shuttle service.)

He got halfway home and, yup, you guessed it, the lights came back on and it did the exact same thing.

So CR-V is back at the shop, he said they already had it back in diagnostic before he even left.

At this point, this is probably starting to bother them as much as it is us.

Still hoping it's an easy fix and inexpensive.

Annnddd... my county is officially under a Burn Ban.

The good, the bad, the wtf...

Took a while to come up with a title for this post. 'Seriously?!?', "WTF, over', '*sigh*', 'You have got to be kidding.'... you get the idea.

CR-V is back in the shop. Check engine light and VSA (Vehicle Stabilization Assist) light came back on, 4 times since last night. Came on, on Mark's way home, he pulled over, checked fluids, VSA light went out, check engine stayed on.

I told him to call them today. So naturally, check engine light went out even before he left this morning (it was on when we went to vote at 630am). But! It happened *3 times* on his way to work (car shudders, check engine and VSA lights come on).

So I woke up to him texting that he called, they said bring it in, they'll run a free diagnostic to see if it's related to the work they did or not and go from there. He went ahead and rented a vehicle. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's related to previous work, because if it is, it more than likely will be free or at the very least, inexpensive.

Got a message via Ancestry last night, from a half 1st cousin 1x removed (she's a Millennial, I'm a Gen X), they are in the same spot I was, in regards to my dad's birth father- their great grandmother never spoke of him, their grandmother, my dad's half sister, didn't remember him, as he'd died when she was 9. (Which can't be right, if she was born in '42 as they says she was, he died in '53, she'd have been 11.) They know nothin of a son, the grandmother says she was an only child.

But if she was born in 1942, she'd have been listed in the military records, and she's not, the son is.

She is *definitely* my dad's sister- dna proved that, as well as they look similar. At any rate, they'd never even seen photos of Algernon, or his dad, Carl, and had a lot of questions I was able to mostly answer.

Turns out their grandmother's older half brother via her mother, had 4 kids, at least one of which lives here in Virginia. The half brother died in Viet Nam and is listed on the Wall.

Warm today, so I have a few windows open. Nice, light breeze. Still very dry. Hoping for rain this weekend, and not the leaves kind. Thankfully the underground spring that fills the well is still going strong, so no worries there.

Got some sewing stuff I need to do, so off to do that.

Picture this...

You're on the verge of sleep, just about to drift off into a deep sleep, when suddenly, you snap wide awake.

Sniff the air. Frown, sniff again.

Then, carefully wake Mark to see if he smells what you smell. He asked what you smelled.

Smoke, you say. You smelled smoke. Burning wood and leaves.

Mayhem, across your legs, stretches out a paw, lazily saying, don't move, so Mark gets up and goes to look, to make you feel better.

The house is fine. The property is fine. The neighbors are fine.

The scent fades and wafts away. mayhem stretches, gets up and ambles off. goofy floofy boy

You fall asleep.

* * * * * * *

That was my night.

We have Several Wildfires in counties nearby right now.

The weekend was bad as far as smoke went, the windy conditions didn't help.

So apparently, the winds changed last night, and the smell managed to drift into the house. Fun.

*sigh*

Still here, just really busy.

Orion is back in the shop. This time it's the oil pan seal, the timing chamber seal, the VTEC solenoid, and the VVT control solenoid.

Another 2500.00.

It's a 17 year old vehicle, so honestly, it's probably long past time for that stuff to start to fail. But if we can get another 10+ years out of it, we'll take it.

Just sucks, because we'd *just* got bills paid down/off. Ugh.

Sold a bunch of scarves at the Big Otter Mill Festival, so back to weaving up a few more for the next event in 3 weeks.

Car repair bill is (currently) under 3k, so that's a bonus at least.

Weather sucks, can't photograph new stuff for listing right now.

Mom is selling the house and still having feelings about it.

A gaming friend is hospitalized. Doctors are now saying they've done all they can for him.

Orion (our 2006 CR-V) is in the shop.

Looking at a 4k to 5k price tag. Why? Because there's at least one oil leak, if not more and that means seals need replacing.

Guy started to say it might be more feasible to replace the car, & I was like, nope, we are not in a position for a new vehicle right now.

So we repair and get another 5-10 years out of him. Especially since this is the only serious issue with him. (Knock on wood.)

Maybe next year we'll be better able to afford a second vehicle.

Meanwhile, we tighten the belts another notch, keep our heads down and keep going.

This is ironically funny.

So I was trying to flesh out the BiL's side of the family tree this weekend. Asked his mom for her parent's and her late husband's parents' names, as well as anything else she could give me. Sunday morning, she gave me what she had, as per the family bible, and wow, did the floodgates open.

I started working back on the BiL's paternal line first. Get back 5-6 generations and start seeing familiar surnames. I said to Mark, watch BiL and I are very distantly related.

His paternal line has Snows in it. Snow is a Mayflower family. His Snow married a Hopkins, also a Mayflower family. I have both in my ancestry as well as Brewster, another Mayflower family. I hadn't followed my Snow line out- the BiL's paternal grandmother's maiden name, so I took some time to do that.

Once I did, I sat there, just laughing.

Turns out, the BiL's is my 11th Cousin 1 x Removed via his father's mother. Kiddo is not only my niece, but also my 12th Cousin.

I then turned my attention to the BiL's mother's side. Her maternal line is German as German gets. Not from any of the regions Mark's German ancestors are from, so no connections there. I started on her paternal line, the Loflands after that.

Got back to her 6th great grandfather father. It's is as bad as my Micklatchers, in the ways it's spelled. Her 5th great grandfather father was a Dorman Lofland Jr.

1774, he was elected Sheriff of Sussex County, Delaware.

10 May 1775, he was accused (as well as confessed to) counterfeiting Revolutionary War money to the amount of $30.00. He then fled.

1776, he served in 2 separate Co. as a Loyalist- Capt Latimer's Independent Company and Capt William Peery's Independent Company.

8 Jul 1777, a warrant for his arrest, w/ a $300 reward to any person(s) who could capture him & jail him, was signed by John McKinley & James Booth, Secretary.

1 Aug 1778, he is brought up for trial for treason under the Treason Act of 1352.

25 Aug 1778 a letter was written by a lawyer named George Reed, agreeing to defend Lofland in his treason case, for $500.00, but reserved the right to deny representation in 'his other case, due to personal concerns and issues.'

Considering he remarried in 1788, his first wife having died in 1781, after 7 living children, last of whom was born in 1774, it appears that he was either acquitted or pardoned. Or quite possibly jailed for several years, have not found records attesting to what the trial outcome was yet.

He died in 1792.

BiL's mom believes this line to be German, like her maternal line. As of yet, I've not found anything that substantiates that. I have found suggestions that Lofland (Loughland) may in fact be Welsh. Once I find the ancestor who came to America first, I can figure that out.

*grumbles*

Crash City Con is this Fri-Sun in Roanoke, Va.

As great a guy as the Founder is (a friend & regular in our TTRPG group), his staff, particularly for us vendors, is rather lack luster.

It should not take 2 months to respond to vendors. It should not take me going directly to the Founder to verify that yes, my table has been reserved.

It should not take us having to ask when load in time is, are tables/chairs provided or we need to bring our own, all should have been told to us already.

Ugh.

This is their 3rd year.

These things should have been figured out already.

*Especially* since they've changed locations this year & we don't know where anything is in the new location.

*sigh*

If I didn't generally do well at this Con , as well as wanting to support a friend, I'd likely call it quits.

*sigh* Because of course.

Backstory- last time we went up, his dad showed us photo albums of *his* side of the family. We asked to borrow them, to make copies of the photos, he said no.

So this weekend the In Laws went up, and 'found' the photo albums and a box of photos in the office closet. I asked the kiddo to get pictures of the oldest for me if they had time (they didn't). And then we find out that the FiL *gave the photos to the InLaws*.

And he wonders why Mark doesn't have (or want) a close relationship with him.

Asinineness of the day.

Last night, read a comment about genetics, Native Americans and white people.

Someone replied that 'it's complicated'. And proceeded to claim that "You can have indigenous ancestry and after 5 or more generations it is no linger retained. "

That's... not the least bit true.

Autosomal DNA tests, which most genealogy sites use, go back 6 to 8 generations, themselves. YDNA tests- the male line- can go back up to 52 generations. And mtDNA- the maternal line- can show you 10k years worth of ancestry.

They responded today with this foolishness- Yes it can in mtDNA and YDNA and not show in the atDNA. It is complicated when it comes to atDNA. Having written the Beginners Guide to DNA. I know in teeny bit about this 😉"

It's Not Complicated. The tests themselves explain everything they can and can't do, in layperson's terms, so they can be easily understood. And if you knew this, why'd you say it stopped at 5 generations???

My African ancestry doesn't come into my line until 8 generations out. My DNA test, autosomal, shows exactly that too.

DNA doesn't just up and say, welp, there's your 3rd great grandparents, no more DNA info for you.

Genetics don't work like that.

I'm sure there's probably *some* good info in their book, but holy shit are they way off base as far as how DNA works.

Twitter issues

Well, Twitter has thoroughly broken itself.

They appear to be labeling my account as automated or malicious/spam, as of last night, after they started with the tweet limits.

Can't post, can't reply, can't send DMs, can't even like posts.

I was able to pin the post containing links to other locations at the top of my feed, but that was it and that was a fight to do as well.

So looks like Twitter is officially done for me, whether I like it or not.

Family stuff- Beginning of the end

Mark's mom is dying.

Now, she's been in End Stage Alzheimer's for at least a year now, so she's *been* dying, but this time, it's the end.

His dad called a couple weeks ago, said she was fading, we needed to come say good bye. BiL & SiL dropped everything and went up immediately, as he has a job that allows him to work from nearly anywhere, so no big deal to do so for them. We on the other hand, cannot do that. So we made plans to go up in July.

Well, last week, Mark's dad called, saying she had mere days, when were we coming up and when Mark told him we weren't coming up until July, he wasn't happy. Said things he shouldn't have, about me and my work in particular. Mark blew up at him and finally told him, if she passes before we get up there, then so be it. That he didn't want to remember his mom like this (beridden, unable to communicate, unable to move or eat, on low dose morphine to help her breathe), that he preferred to remember her as she once was. That he said goodbye every time we'd been up there since the diagnosis almost a decade ago. He was so upset at his dad.

He talked about not wanting to go up unless it was for her funeral now. I told him I understood, *I* wouldn't have wanted to see my dad as he was in the hospital either (And my mom told me, she refused to do a video call when the nurses called to say he had mere hours, did she want to say goodbye? She said she did every time she saw him.), so I wasn't going to talk him into it, that I supported him in whatever decision he made.

His dad called last night. He says it's definitely the end, that she's no longer able to eat (she aspirates if he tries to feed her pureed foods & she won't chew if it's solid) and only sleeps most of the day (That's how it was for my dad the last week of his life as well.) He also said he wasn't as depressed about it- which likely colored a lot of his reaction last week, and that he'd keep us updated.

Mark said to me after, that after last week, he wasn't sure he wanted to go up as we planned, after the 4th of July. I told him we could wait until the funeral if he wanted. He wants to spend some extra time up there with his dad, because he thinks he's going to need it, and I agree.

Right now, we are day by day. We know funeral arrangements have already been in place for both of them for years now. There's a will, etc, so really, we just need to show up.

So, yeah, fun times.
