Turns out, a part they had replaced infrequently was bad out of the box (especially for aftermarket parts) or had a habit of failing within weeks (mostly aftermarket, sometimes manufacturer certified, as was ours), and had failed.
The bulletin they received mentioned it could cause a 'phantom code' which was what they saw on Tuesday and thought fixed it. But it had, in fact, had an electric fault that failed in it.
So they replaced it for free because it was under warranty (12 month/12,000 miles).
